The Secret Life of Trainers: A Colt Brennan Film

Posted by Matt Terl on January 6, 2009 – 4:23 pm

It is fascinating how quiet Redskins Park is as the offseason gets underway. The players are largely gone, the coaches have the week off, and even for the people who are still here, the level of intensity has been dialed way down. The feeling is jarring — we were cruising along in fifth gear with the engine revving, and suddenly the car downshifted to second. It’s a clumsy, awkward metaphor, but it’s the best I can do.

That’s not to say that there’s nothing going on, though. The players who are in the area still drop by, for treatment or to pick up things they’d forgotten or just to get away from homes they’re still not used to being at.

I didn’t even know that Colt Brennan was here today until he came running up to my desk, asked for a camera, and ran out. Half an hour later, he turned up with this revealing video, showing what the trainers didn’t tell me about in our lengthy Q&A.

Despite Brennan’s assertion that the training staff is doing Jazzercise, that’s actually EXTREME HOME FITNESS SYSTEM P90X, which should sound familiar to readers of Chris Cooley’s blog. From Tanner Cooley’s description over there, I was expecting something much more … I don’t know, more violent? We’ll see, though. Maybe the training staff will go from regular to ripped in just 90 days. I’ll keep you posted. Read more »

Yet Another Interesting Ad: John Riggins

Posted by Matt Terl on January 6, 2009 – 1:35 pm

Reviewing Redskins ads for yesterday’s Peyton Manning post, I was surprised by two things. First, that so many quality Redskins ads have been removed from YouTube. (For example: John Riggins raps for Ford! Hogs for Theatervision!) That’s seriously disappointing.

And, second, that Sonny Jurgensen actually appeared in a cigar ad. I know, I know — times were different, the Flintstones used to advertise cigarettes, Sonny is STILL known as a cigar lover, blah blah blah. It’s still bizarre to see the starting quarterback of a professional football team selling a tobacco product.

But I figured that was the strangest, most cognitively-dissonant thing I was apt to find. Rummaging through some stacks of old pictures here at Redskins Park today, I found out that I was wrong:

Yep. That’s Super Bowl XVII MVP John Riggins, happily advertising for Winchester shotgun shells.

Tuesday, January 6: Safety Dance

Posted by Matt Terl on January 6, 2009 – 9:44 am

Another day, another bit of speculation about the Redskins offseason plans.

If you brave the wilds of the terrifying ESPN.com redesign (suggested motto: “Reducing clutter by taking up more space!”), you’ll find a whole assortment of articles branded with a snazzy “Predictions 2009” logo.

Alongside such daring insights as “Joe Flacco might be pretty good after all” and “ESPN will be forcing even more New York Yankees content on you,” you’ll find a Jeffri Chadiha column projecting where some NFL veteran free agents might play out their 2009 season.

Before you click on that link (or continue reading here), though, stop and think about the team’s 2008 season for a minute. The Redskins finished 8-8, and I think we can all agree that there are some very definite areas of need. Think about what those needs are, then look at this list of guys Chadiha discusses and guess which one he projects for the team.

  • Brett Favre, QB, New York Jets
  • Donovan McNabb, QB, Philadelphia Eagles
  • Larry Johnson, RB, Kansas City Chiefs
  • Plaxico Burress, WR, New York Giants
  • Brian Dawkins, FS, Philadelphia Eagles
  • Edgerrin James, RB, Arizona Cardinals
  • Bart Scott, LB, Baltimore Ravens
  • T.J. Houshmandzadeh, WR, Cincinnati Bengals
  • Derrick Ward, RB, New York Giants
  • Kurt Warner, QB, Arizona Cardinals
