Redskins @ Bengals – Fourth Quarter Thoughts

Posted by Matt Terl on December 14, 2008 – 4:16 pm

  • Oh my goodness. On third down of the first Bengals drive of the quarter, Ryan Fitzpatrick moved up in the pocket and was taken down by Jason Taylor and London Fletcher. It wasn’t pretty, but it was a half sack for each of those two guys. Not exactly the quarterback-destroying sackfest a few people predicted for Taylor, but … well, it’s something, at least.

Redskins @ Bengals – Third Quarter Thoughts

  • Cincinnati’s civic pride was firmly on display at halftime, as the inevitable press box snack of chili dogs is also accompanied by spaghetti, cheese, and onions, offering the opportunity to create the classic Cincinnati three-way. It was a welcome addition, too, because the hot dogs looked particularly strange today.
  • Here’s what I want to know about the Redskins’ first defensive possession of the half: where’s Rocky McIntosh? He’s reportedly not injured, but he doesn’t seem to be out there on the field. Alfred Fincher looked good in the preseason, sure, but I’m not sure that’s a reason to try him out here. Still, the Rocky-less defense looks good, and holds the Bengals to a punt.

Redskins @ Bengals – Second Quarter Thoughts

  • Here’s a sentence I didn’t expect to write today: at least the defense held the Bengals to a field goal to keep the deficit to 17.
  • There’s some confusion in the press box about if Chris Cooley‘s first quarter catch-and-fumble, which went for 19 yards, qualifies as a Redskins first down. This is a vital question, because if it WAS a first down then the team has one, and if it doesn’t, they don’t have any. It’s important to be able to quantify just how poorly the team is doing.

Redskins @ Bengals – First Quarter Thoughts

Posted by Matt Terl on December 14, 2008 – 2:11 pm

  • This is the emptiest stadium I have ever seen for an NFL regular season game, narrowly edging out the Detroit experience. And, like in Detroit, a huge chunk of the fans who are here are Redskins fans, enough of them that the game is actually somewhat confusing to listen to. Chris Cooley makes a crucial third down catch … and they crowd roars! Then he’s hit and fumbles … and the crowd roars! It’s very strange.
  • Not quite as strange, though, as the sight of Ryan Fitzgerald marching the Bengals down the field for the touchdown and furiously spiking the ball. It’s the NFL, of course, and on any given Sunday blah blah blah … but the Bengals have been statistically terrible. Not just bad, not just so-so, but 32nd ranked on offense, and in the 20s on defense. Being down 7-0 to them is really less than ideal for a team that ostensibly has playoff hopes.
  • Despite all those numbers, the Redskins offense simply cannot seem to get going. It’s three and out, and you know things are going poorly when Ryan Plackemeier‘s 59 yard punt is the best play the Redskins have had in a quarter.
  • The defense stiffens up and forces a three-and-out from the Bengals, and Antwaan Randle El can’t make anything happen on the punt return. Every single phase of the game has had a chance to look lousy today, and it’s only halfway through the first quarter.
  • Another three-and-out for the Redskins, and another good punt for Plackemeier. That’s a bright spot, right? Right? (Although even on the otherwise good punt, it looked like Justin Tryon could’ve let it roll another few yards before stopping it.)
  • I’ve always said that you can’t really stop the Bengals, you can only hope to contain them. This is really ridiculous. It seems safe to say that the Bengals offense won’t be ranked 32nd after today, as they march 95 yards in three easy minutes to make the score 14-0, them.
  • And even Plackemeier’s luck has run out, it looks like, as he gets off a wobbly 35 yarder. The stadium is strangely silent, either because there are so many Washington fans here, or because the Cincinnati faithful have forgotten that you’re supposed to cheer when your team does well. I’m not sure exactly what’s going on here, but it really, really doesn’t look good.

Redskins @ Bengals – Redskins Inactives

Posted by Matt Terl on December 14, 2008 – 11:28 am

kellyhatoff

It’s a very different inactives list for the team this week. Malcolm Kelly is down, but Fred Davis is active (so maybe we’ll see some of what he flashed in practice this week). Number 78 is inactive again, but it’s a different guy than last week, at a different position. Here’s the list.

Redskins inactives:

  • 5 Colt Brennan – emergency third QB
  • 12 Malcolm Kelly – WR
  • 48 Chris Horton – S
  • 53 Marcus Washington – LB
  • 63 Will Montgomery – OL
  • 76 Jon Jansen – OL
  • 78 D’Anthony Batiste – OL
  • 96 Cornelius Griffin – DT

Anthony Montgomery starts for Griffin, H.B. Blades for Marcus Washington, and Michael Green for Chris Horton, and Jason Fabini for Jansen. Also, DeAngelo Hall is starting for Carlos Rogers, but Rogers will play.

Sunday, December 14: Gameday – Redskins @ Bengals

Posted by Matt Terl on December 14, 2008 – 11:17 am

I have heard more WKRP In Cincinnati references in the last 24 hours than I have since the show went off the air in 1982. Not a lot of associations with this city, I guess – you’ve pretty much got Skyline Chili, Graeter’s ice cream, and WKRP.

And Chad Ocho Cinco, of course. The drama around his name change has seriously diminished, what with the Bengals’ disappointing season and the issue with putting Ocho Cinco on his jersey, but all of the official Bengals materials use the name, and it makes me chuckle every time. The roster on the official flipcard, for example.

Even more amusing, though, is the Bengals’ team pronunciation guide, which is a whopping eighteen guys long. Not only did whoever compile it have to explain the correct way to pronounce such simple names as T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Chinedum Ndukwe, and Eric Ghiaciuc, they also want to be sure that you use the correct Spanish pronunciation of the I in Cinco.

Anyhow, it’s not too cold here, but the wind threatens to be a factor in the kicking and passing games. The Redskins are wearing the white jerseys with the burgundy pants, and I should have inactives for you shortly.
