Friday Redskins Links – 12/12

Posted by Matt Terl on December 12, 2008 – 4:17 pm

  • David Elfin has the injury summary that I missed in my practice update, including a report that Jon Jansen won’t be making the trip. For the record, the official injury report has Jansen listed as “doubtful,” but we’ll see.
  • The Curly R’s Ben Folsom was able to get a look at the inside of FedExField the other day at a Jason Campbell charity event, and he has quite the comprehensive post on the subject: photos, videos, text … well worth checking out.
  • And The Om Field has part one of a very detailed look at the team’s approach to the offensive and defensive lines.

On the Field for Practice – 12/12

Posted by Matt Terl on December 12, 2008 – 2:54 pm

Today was the first day that I think the wind could easily be described as “biting,” and it was really blowing out there, everybody’s windpants snapping in the breeze. I looked to see if I could get a picture of the goalpost flags whipping around, but instead the whole goalposts were rocking back and forth. Not the weather you want for passing or kicking, that’s for sure.

  • Good news for everyone who says I only post about what a great practice Jason Campbell is having, I guess: Campbell had a bit of a bumpy start today. Passes were sailing on him, execution seemed to be lacking, and even the characteristically stoic QB seemed a bit frustrated. He and Chris Cooley – perhaps taking their cue from the soothing QB/TE meetings that Jason Witten and Tony Romo allegedly have – spoke briefly off to the side, and it was at that point that practice turned for the offense. Campbell seemed to be moving smoother and easier and his passes were knifing through the wind to be caught. Cooley himself snagged two or three of them, including a high floater that he fielded almost like a punt, yelling afterward, “Did you see how I judged the wind on that one?” Whatever was said, the more positive tone held, and it finished as yet another strong practice in a week of them, which was something of a relief.

Friday, December 12: What Wide Receivers Do In Practice

Posted by Matt Terl on December 12, 2008 – 11:00 am

Yesterday, commenter Ax asked me what, precisely, the wide receivers actually do at practice. My initial inclination was to say that they run around a lot and occasionally catch passes, but it seemed like a needlessly glib, unhelpful response.

randleelwithkindereggSo I promised that I’d have one of the receivers take me through it today, and explain exactly what they do and what to look for when they’re practicing. I had assumed that this would have to wait until open locker room, or later today when the guys are trying to get out of the facility for their night off, but one nice thing about this job is that sometimes you get lucky.

Players walk by where I sit fairly often – they have to pass me to get to the PR and HR offices, two places they all need to visit occasionally – but they don’t always have the time or inclination to stop and chat. Today, though, the person Antwaan Randle El was hoping to see was out of the office (freeing up his time), and he was distracted by the tempting chocolate/hazelnut eggs in my desk-neighbor’s authentic German Kinder Überraschungs advent calendar (leading him to stop and stay for a bit).

He kindly agreed to take some time and answer this pressing question, which I figured would prevent me from having to offer the dumb glib answer I had initially come up with.

So what, exactly, do you wide receivers do in practice?

“Run. Run, run, run. That’s all we do.” [So much for that hope.]
