Redskins Voting the Non-Redskins Ticket

Posted by Matt Terl on December 11, 2008 – 5:18 pm

The fans no longer have to worry about Pro Bowl voting. Everyone got out and Voted the Redskins Ticket, and the net result was that out of nineteen positions on the Pro Bowl rosters, nine of them have Redskins as the leading vote-getters. Thanks to ESPN NFC West blogger Mike Sando’s downloadable spreadsheet, we can see that the Redskins also had eleven second- or third-place finishers in the fan voting.

So congratulations and nice work to everyone who voted. The bad news is, that’s all in the past, and now it moves to the player and coach voting, which takes place this week at team facilities across the NFL. If the voting process for those teams is anything like it is here, this is probably a pretty lively week.

Ever wonder how the player voting works? I had never given it any specific thought, but had a vague mental image of guys sitting quietly on the stools in front of their lockers, gazing contemplatively into the distance as they weigh the relative merits of, say, Drew Brees and Kurt Warner before finally making a careful and deliberate mark on a pre-printed Scantron sheet.

This was not an accurate mental image. Here’s how it actually goes down.

On the Field for Practice – 12/11

Posted by Matt Terl on December 11, 2008 – 2:47 pm

The weather made everything unusual today, including the practice schedule. The typical afternoon practice was moved up by several hours and nailed to the end of what would ordinarily be a shorter morning practice. “Players love that,” Coach Zorn said afterward. “It’s a longer practice, but it’s just one time.” At this point, I worry about anything that disrupts the routine, but I’m a worrier like that. Anyhow, a few reports from a rainy, cold day out at the practice fields.

  • The best news about practice today is that there were a lot more guys there. Returning to full practice were Randy Thomas, Pete Kendall, and Carlos Rogers, and for limited work were Jon Jansen, Todd Yoder, Kedric Golston. So that was an improvement over yesterday.

Yes, The Eagles Game Has Moved

Posted by Matt Terl on December 11, 2008 – 12:31 pm

This is a few days old at this point, but for some reason I’m getting a bunch of questions about it today. So here it is:

The home game against the Eagles on Sunday, December 21, has been moved from 1:00 to a 4:15 kickoff as part of the NFL’s late season flexible scheduling. The good news is that the game was NOT moved to the Sunday night prime time slot, since those night games have been decidedly unfriendly to the Redskins this year.

Anyhow, those of you planning on attending the game (or attending Christmas parties, or celebrating the first night of Chanukah, or engaging in a Winter Solstice ritual, or enjoying some other Winter festival celebration that I’m overlooking) should be sure to adjust your schedules accordingly.

Thursday, December 11: Jason Fabini Likes Short Shorts

Posted by Matt Terl on December 11, 2008 – 10:33 am

It’s well-known that Chris Cooley has a fondness for unusually – some might say unnaturally – short shorts. (In fact, in a simple Google search for “short shorts”, Cooley’s picture is one of the top four results.)

Less well-known is the fact that offensive lineman Jason Fabini – the likely fill-in for Jon Jansen if Jansen’s injury keeps him out this week – has similar tastes.

“I think a string must’ve broken and he rolled the elastic down or something,” one of the trainers said to me when I asked about the shorts at practice yesterday.
