Redskins @ Ravens – Fourth Quarter Thoughts

  • Things you deeply, deeply don’t want to see as a Redskins fan: just when your team finally makes its way into the Ravens red zone, Chris Samuels goes down and Justin Geisinger lines up at the crucial left tackle spot. Geisinger’s a nice guy, and I’ve been told that he’s shown some potential, but you don’t want to be starting a nice guy with a lot of potential against Terrell Suggs. Predictably, Suggs immediately sacks Jason Campbell for a loss. At least Shaun Suisham manages to convert the kick, and the Redskins are on the board. Redskins 3, Ravens 17. But here’s the question: why not move Stephon Heyer to the left side and put Geisinger in on the right? Sure, they’ll flip Suggs to whichever side Geisinger’s on, but at least from the right, Campbell has a prayer of seeing him coming.
  • LaRon Landry, apparently completely enraged by my comments two quarters ago, forces a Willis McGahee fumble, which is scooped up by DeAngelo Hall and returned for 13 yards. The defense has had a frankly ridiculous game despite being on the field for what seems like forever. (I should point out that, in fact, the Redskins are leading in time of possession. It just doesn’t seem that way at all.)

Redskins @ Ravens – Third Quarter Thoughts

Posted by Matt Terl on December 7, 2008 – 10:35 pm

  • The largest announced crowd in the history of M&T Bank Stadium was treated at halftime to … the Baltimore Ravens band playing Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody. Just surreal.
  • Credit where credit’s due, though: this is a very nice stadium, and a gorgeous press box. AND they not only offer the apparently-traditional hot dogs at halftime, but a full meal including crabcakes and green beans, which is nice.

  • The defense holds after the Ravens take the opening kickoff, but the offense can’t return the favor, going three and out and punting the ball. The miracle halftime adjustments I was hoping for don’t seem to be taking effect yet.
  • On third and 1, the Ravens run a fake QB dive that turns into a throwback to Willis McGahee, which he takes over the left side of the line. It’s a successful play, earning the first down, but it brings two things to mind. First, I absolutely hate the play call; it’s the kind of thing that would infuriate me if the Redskins ran it, even if it worked. And, second, I honestly think that if Chris Horton had been in on that play, he sheds the block (that took out Michael Green) and makes the stop. It’s an impossible thing to prove, of course, but I think they’re missing him out there.
  • Well, the defense is getting tired, and understandably so. After going to heroics (to use a Zorn-ism) to keep the score this close, they give up a 19 yard pass to the tight end on fourth and one and let the Ravens drive all the way to their 14 yards line. And even then, even as wiped out as they must be, they hold the Ravens to a field goal. The offense absolutely has to get on the board this drive, if for no other reason than to keep the defense off the field and let them get some rest. Redskins 0, Ravens 17.
  • Mike Sellers has been the best weapon the Redskins have this game, and I’m not sure that’s a good thing. He’s a talented player, a big guy with quicker feet than you’d expect and a metric ton of heart, but when he’s driving your offense, it probably means something has gone awry.
  • And after the offense goes three and out – the exact opposite of what the defense would’ve liked to see – it’s Sellers who makes the tackle on the punt. That guy is really a complete player.
  • The Ravens inexplicably stop running the ball and LaRon Landry makes his first interception off anyone other than Matt Hasselbeck. This absolutely must turn into a touchdown, really. (And nice work by Landry, making my criticism of last quarter look absolutely wrong. I’d like to be wrong about things like that more often, please.)

Redskins @ Ravens – Second Quarter Thoughts

  • I really question the idea of letting Shaun Suisham attempt a 48 yard field goal. Whatever the reason, he’s been having trouble from beyond 40, and it seems like it would’ve been more prudent to play the field position game there. Either way, the score remains Redskins 0, Ravens 14.

  • Standing on the sidelines for the anthem and player introductions, I’m impressed by the number of Redskins fans here. They’re not making up quite the percentage of the crowd that they were in Pittsburgh, but in terms of sheer numbers it looks fairly impressive.

Redskins @ Ravens- A Familiar Sight, For A Different Reason

Posted by Matt Terl on December 7, 2008 – 8:00 pm

They’re handing out signs at M&T Bank Stadium tonight. One side reads “Whacko 4 Flacco,” which is cute enough, I suppose. (I’m not sure what the Redskins equivalent would be. “Ramble for Campbell,” maybe?)

The reverse of the signs, though, is grimly familiar to any Redskins fan even if the colors are wrong.

That’s right: just when the the Hall of Fame voting committee no longer has to listen to Redskins fans insist that Art Monk is worthy of Hall consideration, the Ravens fans are kicking their pro-Art-Modell campaign into high gear.

If it weren’t for Artie Donovan, I’d think that the Hall of Fame had a grudge against people named Art. Anyhow, if any of you have leftover “Art for the Hall” gear that could be dyed purple, you could consider recycling it by sending it north.

Sunday, December 7: Gameday- Redskins @ Ravens

Posted by Matt Terl on December 7, 2008 – 4:47 pm

A word to anyone planning to make the road trip up here to the Quarrel For Laurel: it is windy and cold. Seriously windy. Like, weather advisory windy.

I dropped by the ExtremeSkins tailgate a bit earlier – while it was still light out, in fact – and the wind is whipping through the concrete stanchions underneath I-395.
